Tackling Sleeplessness

Do you know that the happiest moment of the day is when you are lying on the bed and fall asleep? On the other hand, the unhappiest moment would be the time you are supposed to wake up to get to work!

Not being able to sleep when you wanted to is a very discouraging thing. Therefore, having a good sleep is important and it is the only target for you to achieve each night.

I have some own formulated theories to tackle sleeplessness. Hope you can have a try, and let me know the outcome. It is understandable that you cannot force your brain not to think, but you can tune it to think in a way that it is aligned to what your body wants.

1) Think about the future, not past. Thinking of the past only add to the misery because what you are thinking cannot change the thing that has happened. Instead, think of your future plans because the future will eventually come and you can make use of what you have been planning in your mind every night. It's like an investment.

2) Sleep in a specific position. Try to observe your sleeping position and find the position that you eventually sleep every night. It may be on the side or facing the ceiling. When you are twisting and turning on the bed, as long as you are not in that specific position, you can safely say that you are not asleep or ready to sleep yet. Sometimes, when you are trying hard, you can make yourself to lie in that position and you will be fast asleep before the last sheep jumps over the gate.

3) Think of creative things such as music, decoration and art: This is to balance up your brain. In the day time, you are facing with lots of problems, figures and numbers, and they choke up your left brain. So, at night time, it is advisable to tune back by thinking using your right brain.

Our 3-in-1 Dilemma

I saw from the newspaper yesterday that our favourite 3-in-1 beverages is one of the health hazards due to the high content of sugar. It is a potential time-bomb (diabetes) for us if our intake is consistently high and uncontrolled each day.

A usual coffee sachet is 20g packed with coffee, sugar and creamer. For my favourite White coffee, the sachet contains double of that, which is 40g. Everything is doubled, especially the sugar and creamer. I totally agreed with the statement above because we cannot control the amount of sugar that is taken since it was pre-packed.

There are 2 ways to go about; drinking in a bigger cup or choosing the sugar-free option but both are not the best solutions. Option 1 will makes our cuppa not-so-perfect tasting anymore, while option 2 gives us another headache; sugar-free means more creamer, and it becomes cream coffee.

So, my favourite cup of white coffee now comes with a 3-in-1 dilemma;
1) more 3-in-1, potential health problem due to high sugar content
2) go for sugar-free option, potential health problem due to high creamer content
3) go for sugar-free option, price is more expensive though no sugar content

Furniture Choice

I was searching through the web recently to look for ideas to change the furniture in my apartment, and I saw a picture that I liked from Couchtisch weiss. Though the webpage is in Deutsch language, the picture told me the design is very European, elegant and clean.

I was also impressed and captivated when I saw the foldable chair made from corrugated carton material invented by a young Taiwanese designer by the name of Chisen Chiu. I would like to get this piece of furniture for my house because I think it looked cool, practical and most importantly, eco-friendly. What impressed me was the possibility of the furniture to be expanded and transformed into a chair that could seat 8 person. I have in my mind to put this furniture in my study room, where I can have few friends coming for a chat session.

The furniture is given the name, FlexibleLove™ and it was derived from the concept of a ‘flexible love-seat’ – seating that could hold from one to as many as sixteen individuals; changing length and shape with a simple pull at each end.incorporated an ‘accordion-like, honeycomb’ structure to create durable furniture pieces produced from widely-available recycled materials. In this case, recycled materials such as paper and wood waste were used, and the manufacturing processes were also known to be environmental friendly.

Are We Poor?

I saw an interesting article in Malaysian Insider today, with the title is "How poor are we?". Even before I read on, I knew what it was trying to tell; the reality of the poverty condition in our country.

I don't believe the newspaper reported poverty facts and statistics, more so after what is revealed in this article. Someone did a research and showed to us how the government's definition is incorrect.

Below were some of the arguments, taken from the article. You be the judge.

1) Our poverty base line was defined at RM800. But the actual figures depend on the geographical location of the poor. This means if someone from Peninsular earns RM810, he/she is not considered poor. This income is necessary to buy a group of foods that would meet the nutritional needs of the members of a household, and to meet other basic necessities such as clothing, rent, fuel and utilities, transport and communications, medical expenses, education and recreation.”

2) The World Bank standard recommends that medium-income countries should calculate the Poverty Line Index (PLI) based on US$2 (RM6.20) per individual per day. If that figure was used for Malaysia, a theoretical household of 4.4 people would then need RM858 a month to not be declared poor.

3) However, using Malaysia's defined PLI of RM763, it is translated into a daily income of RM25.45. This means that to the government, you are able to live on RM5.80 a day. RM5.80 is supposed to pay for three meals, transport costs, rent, recreation and the other components for ONE person in ONE day!

5) If we follow countries such as Britain and Australia, the PLIs will based on the median income of its households. In Malaysia the median income is RM2,830. Using this method, the poor people in the country should be earning below RM1,886. In effect, this translates into RM14.20 per day for an individual to meet all their eight needs.

Therefore, from what I understand from the statements above, there should be more poor people than we thought there are, and many of the people living in the city don't know they actually fall into the poverty zone.

Buying Cheap Jerseys

I like wearing jerseys, and used to wear it every day back in my Uni days. In fact, I still own several soccer jerseys from English Premier League teams such as Chelsea and Aston Villa, and World Cup participating countries such as Spain, Brazil, France and Italy.

Often, I like wondering at downtown looking for affordable jerseys. I would not say it cheap, but the genuine ones are really out of my budget. I was recently introduced to cheap jerseys, and find that I can't believe the price that was shown on the website. On a quick browse, I would say that what they are selling; T-shirts and jerseys are really cheap. Some are even advertised at zero cost.

Just take a look at a sample World Cup T-shirt suitable for Brazil fans and samba lovers.

A Creative Idea For Using An Office Supply

I am very interested in office furnishing due to my association with the people in Ikea and Steelcase. I think with a little creativity and investment, we can make a dull and sloppy place become a soothing and fun work place. Not to forget, office supplies also can play a good part to complement on the furnitures. One great place to check out the office supplies is at http://www.office1000.com/.

We are used to printing papers for meetings, for filing and for mailing purpose. Often, we ended up with plenty of used papers due to user carelessness or machine faulty. The problem started when the papers are discarded directly into the dustbin. The best way to work around this is to install the recycle bins that segregate the printed paper, plastic and other wastes. Not only it can help save time in managing the waste, it also helps in saving the environment because certain items are recyclable.

Office1000 offers some pleasant looking recycling containers, and I particular like the "Public Square Recycling System"-type containers. They look cool when the sit at the lobby of my office. They are also a good tool to teach children on waste recycling with their colourful containers and functional lid. You can check this out from http://www.office1000.com/discount/recycling-containers.html.

Interested To Know How Happy We Tell People We Are

Saw this news when I opened Yahoo! browser; "The World's Happiest Countries". It linked to an article published by Forbes.com. I was very interested to know how happy Malaysians were. I know many of us are obsessed with this kind of rankings and statistics, but it only represented a certain percentage of our 26 million people.

The Top 20 countries are as below, where majority are First World countries. The top 4 comes from the Nordic region; Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and all enjoy high levels of prosperity. This was one of the conclusions they arrived from the survey; Good times probably have more to do with the size of your wallet than the size of your trophy shelf. No doubt, hati jadi happy bila poket sudah berisi...

I know there is another thing Malaysians like to do very much; compare our standing with Singapore..Too bad we lost to them, and also to Thailand, Indonesia and Myanmar.

I Signed Up for SocialSpark!

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Socialspark_small

I got to know about SocialSpark while browsing through a fellow blogger's blog. The name did not catch my attention initially but I was very interested to know how and what is offered in this earn-money-online website. The website markets itself as a blog marketing network that connects advertisers with bloggers through an online marketplace. I made a quick link into the website and I was greeted by an attractive layout in magenta.

Signing up was easy (Sign up for SocialSpark); by registering a username, password, email address & blog url, and claiming the blog. Don't forget to check the terms & condition, and code of ethics too (Code of Ethics). The blog vetting process was rather quick, and mine was approved within 24 hours. I had an unpleasant experience in another website where my blog only got approved after one week.

What differentiates SocialSpark and the other money making website that I am familiar with and subscribe to is the content on its front page. SocialSpark works well in attracting newbies to check further into its website by placing the opportunities and openings on the front page itself. This is the right approach because they show to people what they can offer, rather than wanting people to sign up first and show them later. The front page doesn't only show the summary of the opportunities, it also displays prominent banner ads that show the contest that some advertisers carry. They currently run the contest for Victorinox.

There are many ways they let bloggers make money;

1) Writing reviews of products and services
2) Posting display ads and text links
3) Cost per Click and Affiliate programs
4) Driving traffic to an Advertiser's site through Twitter, Facebook or other social media property

As a start to make new bloggers on board get familiar with SocialSpark, they creatively let bloggers earn their first bucks (USD5.00) by sharing their viewpoints about SocialSpark. I think this effort is commendable and it is a clever investment. It certainly gave me a boost to continue taking up opportunities to add on top of the USD5.00 earned.

So far, I only found one setback. I am not qualified for many opportunities. It may be due to the product not found in my home country, or my page rank doesn't meet to the requirement. But I will work hard to improve on this because SocialSpark's advertisers are a generous lot.

It takes two to tango, and SocialSpark is the dance floor for the advertisers and bloggers to tango.

Pretty In Pink

I believe this is a lady's blog because of the color. The blog is named Pretty in Pink, and it is indeed pink in color, and it looks pretty presentable to me.

Pretty in Pink has a lot of inputs on earning money online websites like the pay-to-click (PTC), pay-per-post (PPP) and paid-to-do-tasks (PTDT). I believe she joined and tried many of those. I would recommend this blog to people who are like me; always finding opportunities to earn an extra bucks on the internet. I would not discount the possibility of following her footsteps in registering in some of her recommended websites. Who would want to throw away money making opportunities?

Some of the websites she mentioned:
1) http://swom.com/. Swom is the social network connecting marketers all over the world.
2) http://www.microworkers.com/. Microworkers is where you can work and earn or offer a micro job.
3) http://www.geostring.com/. Geostring is the place to earn money by building the connection, and the longer you make your GeoString, the more free cash you will get.

To be frank, some of these websites features and payouts sounded too good to be true. I will surely google search to check for their authenticity. Hope they are because the economy is not getting any better by each year, and I need to tap on these to survive.

Home Improvement & Health Care

While surfing around the net aimlessly, I stumbled upon a blog that talks about comfortable life, home improvement, health care, healthy life. The header title, Home Improvement & Health Care sounds interesting to me.

I seldom blog about these topics, and who knows I may learn a thing or two from this blogger. Since I am a house owner and an "unhealthy and lazy" chap, I may be inspired by his writings and make the necessary changes in my life. His words are simple, and it made me feels like reading a magazine. But the contents are not heavy, not long winded and they are easily understood. Another plus point is the simple layout of white background and green words make this blog look presentable to the readers.

Here are some of the tips that may be of interest to many, and most of these are the blogger's self expression and personal thoughts.

Today's 1Joke No 2: 16 Jul 2010

Just saw this news, and there is no doubt that they are trying to wash our brain with mild soap, but we are not DUMB.

Since he thought he is so clever in twisting "price hike" to "upward price adjustment" and "subsidy rationalization" and think we will blindly accept it, we are also not stupid to tell him directly how we feel about him. Instead, we will show it openly during the next GE by putting the cross elsewhere other than his box.

Subtlely, it is not that we like to "eat the other stall's durian, but we DUMP you because you make your durian tastes like manure".

Today's 1Joke: 16 July 2010

I don't understand what the Government is thinking. Why one side is allowed to spend (Government) and the other side is forced to bear (people)?

They increased the price of 5 essential items effective today, such as petrol, sugar and gas in the name of cutting subsidies to avoid the country from going bankrupt. Meanwhile, they are so kind-hearted to make sugar price more expensive in the name of safeguarding the people's health from potential diabetes and heart attacks. Wonder if they will do what they say by making sure the mamak or kopitiam charge lesser for teh tarik kurang manis & teh C kosong?

Just before this, Bank Negara increased the OPR 3 times in 2 months, and this directly affects the people as well. More people are burdened by this increase, because the banks are on the advantage side. Who doesn't know that loan interest rates or BLR raised faster and higher than fixed deposit (FD) interest rates? So, this is a double slaying of our pocket (..too poor to have a wallet).

Meanwhile, in June, the PM elected additional 10 Deputy Ministers, and all these means additional expenses for the salary, allowances and pencen (future expenses).

Then, I read this news from Malaysian Insider an hour ago and what this guy said was very true.

My advice to him; keep all your wise words and ideas, and we will make it possible for you to realize it soon.

Wonder If Paul Got This Right

I tested my prediction skill again by playing the Dream Team Game at the www.fifa.com website. The participant was supposed to select his best 11 and the coach.

Below was my dream team. As expected, the bulk of them came from the teams in the semi and Final. It was hard for me to fill the candidate in the correct position because I only get to see a handful of the matches from free TV. It was also not easy for me to fill up the defender position. I had Gyan, Klose and Robben in mind, but there were no places for them.

I saw the result today (as below), and I correctly placed 4 players in line with the Fifa winning team; Casillas (Goalkeeper), Schweinsteiger (Midfielder), Forlan and Villa (Striker). Other selections correctly predicted but wrongly placed were Puyol, Ramos (Defender), and Sneijder (Midfielder).

How do you think Paul will perform if he was asked to select? I think he will become pening and surrender his job.

Magic Mercury : His Life History

I was introduced to this blog written by a guy from Sweden by the name of Magic Mercury (Life) that started off by introducing his life history. The more I walk into his blog, the more I can find interesting and useful info from the advertisement write ups that he has posted. It was interesting to know briefly about everything that we don't hear from the main stream media such as television.

One thing good about his blog is the simple layout and short write ups. He doesn't choose to impress with loud graphics, and the background is kept in simple white that looks pleasant to the eyes. It was like reading an online no-frills magazine or newspaper. One thing he thought me; KISS (keep it short and simple). I can learn much from his writings especially those related to product and services review.

Not only is he sharing about technology, fashion, and health, he also has info on the chat rooms, and forums for lesbian and bisexual women! What a resourceful piece of info this guy is giving us.

OXIS : Combating Oxidative Stress

Not many people can claim that they do not undergo stress at any point of the time in their life. Even housewives encounter stressful moments doing chore or taking care of the little ones in her own surroundings. To some, facing stress may be a daily routine. There may be good type of stress, but most of the time, it may start off as harmless but develop into harmful stress if not controlled or eliminated.

Oxidative stress refers to the situations in which the body’s antioxidant and other defensive abilities to combat free radicals (a.k.a highly reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen) are overwhelmed and one’s normal healthy balance is either lost or severely compromised. It is caused by the unchecked activities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Both ROS and RNS are highly reactive, unstable molecules that, in healthy cells, are created and neutralized as part of normal cell life.

However, if the production of free radicals and ROS/RNS exceeds the body's natural defense mechanisms, oxidative damage to vital molecules in the body can occur and may lead to cell dysfunction and cell death.  Oxidative stress is also caused by inflammation, exposure to cigarette smoke, pollution, UV light, radiation, certain drugs and other conditions, and increases as we age.

One company from the United States, OXIS International, Inc. is doing research, development and sale of products that counteract the harmful effects of “oxidative stress.” Advancing Oxidative Stress Technology Oxis International, Inc. is the premiere provider for the potent antioxidant, Ergothioneine and through their patented synthetic manufacturing process remains the only significant commercial source of pure l-ergothioneine worldwide.

Their product line includes therapeutic nutraceutical products, cosmeceutical products and proprietary formulations and clinical products that are developed internally and/or out-licensed to biotech and pharmaceutical companies as drug candidates.

Meanwhile, OXIS focusses on naturally occurring protective substances since they are more likely to be both safe and efficacious. The primary products incorporate and emphasize the multifaceted “super antioxidant” compound, L-Ergothioneine (“ERGO”), as a key component. They own three (3) patent and two (2) patent pending applications related to ERGO that address ERGO’s protective effects and activities, and the ERGO manufacturing process.

Scientific papers published that ERGO is one of the most potent, multifaceted biological compounds with both appreciable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and other protective properties. ERGO acts by itself, or in combination with other natural compounds to improve the body’s own intrinsic defenses against oxidative stress, and addresses very important health concerns including aging and age-related disorders that are increasing with trends such as;

  • Brain health
  • Immunity against diseases
  • Anti-aging/skin health
  • Inflammation
  • Detoxification
  • Blood sugar regulation

The potential benefits of ERGO are revealed in their website: http://www.oxis.com.

Oxis also has several therapeutic compounds that are available to be licensed including anti-inflammatory and several therapeutic antioxidant mimics with potential applications in the treatment of neurodegenerative (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s), cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other conditions.

1) BXT-51072 is a low molecular weight, orally active, organoselenium catalytic mimic of one of the major cellular protective antioxidant enzyme, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) which uses glutathione as substrate. It regulates secondary inflammatory processes by preventing the activation and release of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, adhesion molecules and inflammatory enzymes.

2) OXIS' LSA Molecules are designed to mimic the activity of the body's natural cell membrane-protecting antioxidant, Vitamin E. The primary disease targets for this series of molecules will include neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Parkinson disease and cardiovascular diseases.

3) Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) catalyzes the destruction of the “Superoxide” molecule. This enzyme has been used in the treatment of Chronic Inflammatory Joint Diseases and in the prevention of Radiation Fibrosis and scarring in patients with Colorectal Carcinoma undergoing radiation treatment.

4) Palosein (Orgotein) is an OXIS FDA approved drug for the treatment of arthritic inflammation in veterinary use called Palosein (NAD/NADA # 045-863), and it is a form of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) that is derived from bovine liver.

OXIS is moving towards stronger growth with their planned launches for two (2) products in summer 2010:

(1) “Ergo-Pur™” - a pure form of our highly potent multifaceted antioxidant
(2) “Ergo-Plex™” - a combination of ERGO plus other functional nutraceutical ingredients

With such great product and healthy stock price movement, this is definitely not a penny stock company. Instead, it is a visionary company with great potential to strive far in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and therapeutics industries.

Our Ref at World Cup

It started as a proud moment when I heard that our Malaysian referee, Subkhiddin was selected to be one of the referees at the World Cup. I think he was an assistant referee in the previous World Cup. He did made us proud for being the only Malaysian who can be at the World Cup 2010, standing on the pitch, and not sitting on the bench waving the team flag or blowing the vuvuzela.

Then, my pride increased by a level when it was announced that he will be at the opening match between South Africa and Mexico. It was still OK to know that he was only named as the 4th official, meaning that he don't get to run on and by the pitch but assisting his counterpart outside the pitch.

However, everything became anti-climax when I read from the FIFA website that he was only shortlisted as the 4th official in each of the matches he was supposed to be in. What a waste! No one can describe how bad it was for him to be one of the 4 referees to be picked to represent Asia, but the only one not being assigned a match.

Apa dah jadi?

Post World Cup

The most anticipated event of the year has come to an end. My predictions since day 1 has been very bad, averaging at only 20% success rate. I participated in the Castrol's FIFA World Cup Predictor game and ended up in the 30,758th position in the global rank and 423rd position in Malaysia. Luckily it was only a virtual game, and I think I will be one of those who will be standing at the edge of the building now if the football betting is legalized in time for the World Cup.

I predicted for a victory to Holland, and Golden Ball award to Wesley Sneijder. But it ended up with Spain being the champion and Diego Forlan the Golden Ball winner. Anyhow, my top 3 predictions for the Golden Ball award was correct.

Everyone can sleep well again beginning tonight, and store enough energy for the next round in Brazil in 2014.

Don't forget our M-League is also getting very exciting with Selangor and Kelantan chasing for the honour, with Selangor leading the league with 54 points, 5 points ahead of Kelantan. There are four more matches to play.

Ole ole!! Selangor Boleh!
