SEA Games is starting today, and one of the main focus for Malaysians will surely be on our football team. Even before the start, the team has gone through the hard times when they were not allowed to fly as per scheduled, and was delayed for a day. This has screwed up their training schedule, and we hope they are matured enough not to use this issue as the excuse for failing to achieve their target.
The last time Malaysia won the gold medal was in 1989 in Kuala Lumpur, and we nearly got the gold in 2001 in KL also. I was at Stadium Shah Alam to witness the near miss, and my seat was directly facing the spot where the Thai player scored the goal through our keeper's celah kangkang. In the other Games after the 1989 triumph, we hardly qualify for the semifinals.
Many may not have known that Malaysia holds a special record. We have the tendency to lose to many lower ranking countries, and the list includes almost all 204 footballing nations. In South East Asia region, out of the 10 countries, only Brunei, Cambodia and Timor Leste have not beaten us.
Our footballers are starting their campaign today against Timor Leste, and it will either be Timor Leste creating a record by beating us for the first time, or we are adding Timor Leste into the list of countries that has beaten us.
Just watch..Boleh ke tak boleh?
